Raw vs. Refined: The Real Deal on Sugar – Red River Valley Girls

“Raw” and “natural.”  Buzzwords like this get thrown around to make you feel good about what you’re buying, but what do they really mean?

You’ve got all kinds of sugar to pick from: raw sugar, turbinado, cane sugar, refined sugar… All these labels, how do you choose?

Let’s start with the basics.  There are two sources of sugar: sugar cane and sugar beets.  Remember when we talked about how sugar is made from sugar beets?  (Check out by clicking HERE if you missed it.)  Long story very short: the sugar beets are sliced, diffused, squeezed, purified, boiled and evaporated, and spun into pure white sugar.
